What Is Full Coverage or Physical Damage Insurance?
Full Coverage, also known as Physical Damage Insurance or a Fire, Theft, and Collision policy, protects your vehicle. It includes:
- Collision Coverage – Covers damage when your vehicle collides with another vehicle or object.
- Comprehensive Coverage – Covers losses from fire, theft, vandalism, or other non-collision events.
This policy typically covers either the cost to repair your vehicle to its pre-loss condition or the cost to replace it with a similar vehicle, whichever is lower. A deductible applies, meaning you are responsible for a set amount before insurance covers the rest.
It’s important to note that Full Coverage is separate from Liability Insurance, which covers injuries and damages to others.
Do I need Full Coverage Insurance?
It depends. While the TLC only mandates Liability Insurance, lenders and leasing companies often require both liability and physical damage coverage for financed or leased vehicles.
